I stand on the sacrifices of a million women before me thinking, what can I do to make this mountain taller so that women after me can see farther ” |

BURBERRY COMPETITION
Dissertation & visual product
"Grey Is The New Black!" is an introduction to gender codes, gender neutrality and explores its impact on the fashion industry.
As a part of our BA graduation project, we were given the option to choose between either writing a dissertation or compiling a visual product. My first choice was to do a dissertation, but as I was working on my dissertation, I gathered a lot of content that I thought would make a great visual product. So when I was finished with my dissertation early before the deadline, I made the decision to also compile and submit a visual product. View both dissertation and visual product below: |
asos - menswear live brief
Our first Brief of second year was a live Brief with the online store ASOS. It was a group project where we had to create a four outfit collection based around a trend and customer of our choice. As a group we decided to look in to the 'Scandi' customer, looking at minimal but tailored trends. We had to come up with a concept for the project, an initial theme to base our collection around. We started looking in to Assassins and Hitmen with the initial inspiration taken from the film 'Leon'. We came up with the brand name 'Clean Cut', which was a play on words from the film. Leon is referred to as a 'cleaner' (hitman) and our collection was going to be very neat with a clean style.
With so much work to do within the time frame we split the group in to different strenghts, with myself working on fabric manipulation and sampling based on some of the design work I and other group members were producing. Having to source Fabrics, Trims, Swingtags and all other branding products it was a challenge to keep on top of all the work. |
Development from 2D-3D, our initial research helped massively with this, as we visited the army supplier 'Anchor Supply' in Nottingham which we bought braces, belts, straps and accessories which all influenced our designs in one way or another.
Once all our design work was complete we had to dived the work load across the group with each person having the responsibly of making a minimum of 2 garments. I really wanted to push my skills in this project so I took on the roll of making the tailored biker jacket, a pair of trousers, and an additional shirt. Being interested in tailoring I felt that this would be a good learning experience to take on.
The pattern cutting of the garments was a lot more complex than we've done before as we had been given a 'fit model' (a model with the standard measurements) in which we had to make our own garments fit perfectly to.

Once everybody had completed their garments we had source 4 models to do a photoshoot displaying all four of the outfits and accessories together in a location suited to our customer and brand.
Portfolio and market research was also spilt within the group, each having to do an equal amount of work and keeping within the same templates and theme throughout. We wanted to keep the hitman style along with the clean minimal look throughout our work.
After the project was over we had to present all our work to some of the Asos Menswear team. With them really liking our collection, complementing on our silhouettes, colours, precision and the branding which I took a lead role in.
It was really good expericance not only working with such a big company like Asos but working within a group it really taught me how important communication and leadership is within a group.
